Abimana, Vino and Tora to Play Warkop DKI in Reboot Movie 'Jangkrik Boss!'
Jakarta. Rumors and speculations are over as Falcon Pictures announced on Thursday (09/06) that Abimana Aryasatya, Vino G. Bastian and Tora Sudiro will play legendary comedy trio Warkop DKI—made up of Dono, Kasino and Indro—in the upcoming reboot "Warkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss!"
The legendary trio kept Indonesia laughing during the 80s and 90s, releasing a total of 34 comedy movies—almost all of them box office hits. Wahyu Sardono, or Dono, died from lung cancer in 2001. Kasino Hadiwibowo died of brain tumor in 1997.
Indrojoyo Kusumonegoro, or Indro, is the last living member of the trio and the executive producer in this reboot project.
The film recently wrapped up shooting in Jakarta and Malaysia and will be released in two installments. The first installment will open nationwide in September.
Director Anggy Umbara said casting was the most difficult part of the making of the film, and that Indro was a big help. Indro said at one point they thought of using silicone masks on the actors.
"We had a few standup comedians to audition for us, but in the end we decided to use actors," Anggy said, as quoted by Kompas.
Indro said he did a workshop with the new cast, which made him feel very emotional, as he almost felt Dono and Kasino were there with him.
"God, it was like déjà vu. I cried," Indro said. "Warkop is our legacy and I am glad Falcon saw that and made this tribute."
Producer Frederica from Falcon said she is looking to develop "Warkop DKI Reborn" into a franchise.
