Golden Globe Nominated Film 'Lion' to Headline Australian Indonesian Cinema Festival
Jakarta. Golden Globe nominated film "Lion" is the main attraction for the upcoming Australian Indonesian Cinema Festival, which will be held on Jan. 28-29 in Makassar and Jakarta, and in February in Surabaya.
The drama starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman follows the life journey of Saroo Brierley, a 5-year old Indian boy who was separated from his birth mother when he took a train trip to Calcutta. Adapted from Brierley's 2012 memoir "A Long Way Home," the movie received four Golden Globe nominations for best drama, best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best original score.
This film is a feature debut by Australian filmmaker Garth Davis, who directed the 2013 mystery drama television show "Top of the Lake" that was aired by BBC and Sundance.
Brierley is scheduled to attend a question and answer session after the screening of "Lion" on Jan. 28 in Makassar and on Jan. 29 in Jakarta.
"Lion" is the latest Australian production in the festival's lineup, which also includes 2015 films "Girl Asleep," "Looking for Grace," and "Spear." The festival will also include Australian 2012 survival drama "Satellite Boy" and a 2016 short film "The Ravens."
The festival will also screen the finest work by Indonesian directors who studied film in Australia, such as "What They Don't Talk About When They Talk About Love" by Mouly Surya, "Sokola Rimba" by Riri Riza, both of which premiered in 2013, and a 2015 short film "Sendiri Diana Sendiri" ("Following Diana") by Kamila Andini.
Ambasador Paul Grigson said the Australian embassy received 300 short film submission from aspiring Indonesian filmmakers and the judges, which include Kamila, selected six finalists whose work will be screened during the festival. The awards ceremony will take place at Senayan City XXI in South Jakarta on Jan. 29.
