Jakarta. After canceling his performance in Jakarta and postponing some of his Asian tour dates following a cycling accident in London last year, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has now confirmed a solo concert at the 88,000-capacity Gelora Bung Karno in South Jakarta on May 3 next year.

The singer's management in the UK has also announced the second phase of his Asian tour, which will take the "Shape of You" singer to South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Japan.

Jakarta will be the sixth stop for Sheeran on the Southeast Asian leg of the "Ed Sheeran Divide World Tour 2019."

"We are proud to announce that Ed will finally come to meet his fans in Indonesia," PK Entertainment chief executive Peter Harjani said in a press conference on Wednesday (28/11).

For safety reasons, Peter said the GBK show will be a seated concert.

"He [Sheeran] is one of those singers who always pay extra attention to the safety aspect of his concert and his fans. This decision is part of the requirements from him and his management," Peter said.

PK Entertainment marketing director Harry Sudarma said Sheeran will also personally choose his opening acts.

"We're still waiting for his final words on that front," Harry said, adding that they could be local or international musicians.

Sheeran is currently on the North American leg of his global "Divide" stadium tour.

Peter said the artist is "not only one of the most successful recording acts ever, but also one of the world’s most in-demand live acts."

On this summer's UK run of his tour, the singer played to over 1.1 million people, including four nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, making his the biggest ever solo tour the UK has ever seen.

Born in February 1991 in Halifax, England, Sheeran began playing guitar at a young age and soon after started writing his own songs.

In 2011, Sheeran released his 10 million-selling debut album "+" (Plus), which featured the UK's biggest selling debut track "The A Team."

In 2014, he returned with another critically acclaimed album "x" (Multiply) featuring the global smash "Thinking Out Loud."

The album went number one on both sides of the Atlantic and has since been named one of the biggest-selling albums of all time by The Official Charts Company.

The album has now sold 16 million copies worldwide.

In March last year, the 27-year-old singer released a new album titled "Divide" that broke a Spotify record for first-day album streams with 56.7 million listens in 24 hours.

Two of the songs on the album, "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill," debuted at No. 1 and No. 6 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sheeran has won Grammys for his hits, including for Thinking Out Loud in 2014 and Shape of You in 2017.

A song of his also appeared in the second episode of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit Trilogy."

On his current world tour, Sheeran plays 16 to 18 songs for over 90 minutes in each gig. The set list includes hits such as "Gallaway Girl," Castle on the Hill, "Supermarket Flower" and "Perfect."

Tickets for his Jakarta concert will be priced from Rp 550,000 ($38) to Rp 2.6 million ($281). Online sales will start at noon on Dec. 5 from www.edsheeranjakarta.com.
