Technology, Surprise Appearances and Collaborations Light Up LINE Concert Medan
Medan, North Sumatra. The second edition of LINE Concert, in Medan, North Sumatra on Saturday (27/01) was a night filled with surprises — video-calling fans, unexpected collaborations, and spotting former Jakarta governor Djarot Syaiful Hidayat among the audience.
Pop singer and rising diva Raisa was first to perform. Dressed in a pink ruffled sabrina top and green pants, Raisa wowed the audience with her famous ballads "Jatuh Hati," "Apalah Arti Menunggu," "Terjebak Nostalgia" and "Kali Kedua."
Though her music is dominated by sentimental tunes, Raisa gave an all-out, energetic performance and the crowd's enthusiasm to sing along never wavered.
The singer used the video call feature on LINE app to contact her fan club group, Your Raisa, in Jakarta. The call was broadcast during the concert, and fans asked her to sing "Usai di Sini."
The use of LINE's technology did not stop there. Each time performers interacted with their fans, their messages were displayed on screen.
Glenn Fredly gives his Rame-Rame People fan club a hint about the song he would like to perform. Then he appeared with his band, and went straight to play a rendition of "Januari" on the piano. This got the crowd singing even before he started himself.
The 3,500 audience went crazy when he sang "My Everything." Long solos by guitarist Andre Dinuth and saxophonist Nicky Manuputty, especially in "Terpesona," created suspense before "Sekali Ini Saja," in which Glenn took a girl from the audience onstage.
Inspiring Words and Surprise Visit
Glenn's performance was not just about romantic songs and sweeping girls off their feet.
He told the audience about his hometown, Ambon in Maluku, and its current campaign to become the world's city of music recognized by Unesco. The city had to go through a long journey to recover after it was torn by religious conflict in 1999.
"I just want to tell you, never underestimate your amazing town. This city's youth has huge potential," he said to the Medan audience.
Glenn also addressed the presence of Djarot Syaiful Hidayat in the audience: "It's time for Medan to have a cooler concert venue."
Djarot, former Jakarta Governor, is now running in the North Sumatra gubernatorial election.
He told reporters on the sidelines that if he is elected, he will try to make it come true.
"Jakarta has JIExpo in Kemayoran, which is great for concerts. It allows us to channel people's creativity. We know that the people of Medan love music, so there needs to be an adequate venue," Djarot said.
Collaborations
After Glenn's performance, veteran Kahitna sang their hits "Kekasih Hati." "Andai Ia Tahu," "Cantik" and "Rahasia Cintaku #Baper."
They kicked it up a notch by calling Arsy Widianto, a son of their pianist Yovie Widianto. Arsy sang Kahitna's "Takkan Terganti" and Bruno Mars's "Versace on the Floor." Yovie also promoted his son's recently released first single "Nembak."
The second collaboration was of Kahitna and Glenn Fredly in the audience's most anticipated song "Mantan Terindah."
Sheila on 7 came out as the final performer of the night. With "Hari Bersamanya," "Seberapa Pantas," "Sahabat Sejati," "Melompat Lebih Tinggi" and "Itu Aku," Sheila got the crowd jump up and down and received rapturous applause.
The band's vocalist Duta called Raisa to join him in singing "Sebuah Kisah Klasik," an 18-year-old song about going in separate directions, which closed the Medan concert.
LINE Concert was first held in September in Surabaya, East Java.
LINE Corporation has not revealed yet in which city the next gig will take place.
