Tompi Launches His Latest Album With Photo Exhibition
Jakarta. Singer Tompi launched his latest album with a photography exhibition at Oktagon in South Jakarta, on Wednesday (02/11).
Tompi told Metro TV that the exhibition of his own photography works will help to convey the context of the "Romansa" ("Romance") album.
The 38-year-old singer and doctor started exploring photography three years ago, before organizing the exhibition with Glymps, a creative media firm he recently established with friends.
The exhibition titled "Chinese Ink" showcases portraits of Indonesian Chinese printed on canvas.
"I've painted the faces in black and captured them with an analog camera," Tompi said.
Some of his subjects were victims of the 1998 anti-Chinese riots in Indonesia. He said he hopes that such conflicts, triggered by ethnicity or religion, will never happen again.
Tompi's more recent photo works are also presented at Oktagon, including photographs of "Bunga Penutup Abad" ("Flower That Ends a Century"), a theater performance with Happy Salma, Reza Rahardian, Chelsea Islan and Lukman Sardi, based on the works of renowned Indonesian writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
"Chinese Ink" is on display at Oktagon until Nov. 8.
