Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Thursday (01/03) appointed Insp. Gen. Heru Winarko as the new chief of the National Narcotics Agency, or BNN.

Heru, 55, is replacing now retired Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso.

Since October 2015, he was serving as law enforcement deputy at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The president expressed hope that at BNN Heru will implement the good practices and work ethics of KPK, and will curb the circulation of illegal drugs in Indonesia.

"Drug trafficking involves huge amounts of money, high turnover," the president said, as quoted by BeritaSatu TV.

Heru promised to continue his predecessor's policies and said he will improve the agency's addiction prevention and rehabilitation programs.

"Narcotics are our common enemy," he said, as quoted on the Cabinet Secretariat's website.
