Jakarta. The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency, or BPOM, has confiscated in Jakarta 100,000 illegal cosmetic items worth Rp 7.6 billion ($526,637), imported from China and Malaysia. The cosmetics reportedly contain toxic substances, the agency said on Friday (27/07).

BPOM Jakarta head Sutriadi Darma said the illegal were seized from a warehouse in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Thursday.

"Among the products seized were facial creams, nail polishes and nail polish removers," he said, adding that the cosmetics alone were worth Rp 3.7 billion, while the raw materials seized were worth Rp 3.9 billion.

Sutriadi said one of the warehouse's owners comes from Malaysia, and the raw materials were imported from China. He said most of the seized products had no distribution licenses, and may contain dangerous substances.
