120 Homes Destroyed, 1,200 People Left Homeless in Medan Fire

Jakarta. A massive fire has destroyed more than 120 homes in Medan Belawan, a subdistrict of Medan, North Sumatra, on Saturday night (20/08), leaving at least 1,200 people homeless. No casualties were reported.

Medan Disaster Mitigation Agency public information officer Deni Depari told Detik.com that the fire broke out at Taman Makam Pahlawan, Gudang Arang Belawan, Belawan I and Medan Belawan at 6.15 p.m.

At least 20 fire trucks were dispatched to the area and firefighters only managed to extinguish the blaze at around 9 p.m.

The agency is still calculating the total losses caused by the incident, Dani said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
