13 Punished for Eating Lunch During Ramadan in Bogor
Jakarta. Officials from the Leuwiliang subdistrict in Bogor, West Java, have imposed strict regulations on local Muslim residents who do not fast during Ramadan, including physical sanctions.
Public Order Agency officials (Satpol PP) raided a group of food stalls on Thursday (09/06) and found 13 people eating their lunch. After confirming they are Muslim, the men were taken to the subdistrict office where they were lectured and sentenced to push-ups.
“It is a form of counsel for them not to repeat their actions,” Leuwiliang subdistrict head, Chairuka Judhianto, said on Friday (10/06), as quoted by local media.
Judhianto said the punishment was based on a circular letter issued by Satpol PP, which said restaurants and food stalls can only open from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. and from 2.00 a.m. to 4.00 a.m. for pre-dawn sahur.
The letter also bans cafes and entertainment spots from opening during Ramadan and urging hotel and restaurant workers to wear Muslim dress. It calls for discipline if warnings go ignored.
“If we catch them again, we will tell them to do more push ups. As for the stall owners, we warned them. If they are found to be open again at noon, we will later seal the stall," Judhianto added.
The circular called on Bogor residents to create a "positive atmosphere" during the fasting month and to not cause any "security issues."
