2018 Asian Games Organizers Set to Cut More Events
Jakarta. The Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee, or Inasgoc, is looking to cut more events from the 2018 Asian Games for the sake of efficiency.
The Olympic Council of Asia, or OCA, has already given Inasgoc the permission to reduce the number of disciplines in the Games from 42 to 39. Inasgoc now wants to reduce the total number of sporting events from 431 to 421.
The organizers said they want to cut more events from the Games to reduce costs.
"We'll try to negotiate with the OCA to cut ten more events," Inasgoc steering committee deputy head Puan Maharani said at the vice-president's office in Central Jakarta on Monday (29/05).
Of the 39 sports now in competition, 31 are Olympic sports, five are non-Olympic sports and three are sports proposed by host Indonesia. Aside from reducing costs, the organizers also want to focus on sporting events Indonesian athletes have the most chance to win.
"We'll ask Inasgoc chairman [Erick Thohir] to do more negotiations with the OCA," Puan said.
Venue Completion's Timeline
Meanwhile, Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono promised most of the venues for the 2018 Asian Games will be completed by the end of 2017.
"Hopefully all of the venues will be up and running by December this year. Some will have been completed before that," Basuki said.
He said the main venue for the Games, the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, is now 68 percent complete and should be finished by December.
The Athletes' Village in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, is 88 percent complete and will be ready for use also in December.
The Inasgoc has announced it will run a test event early in 2018.
