Acting Police Chief: I Have No Problem With Graft Suspect Budi Gunawan
Jakarta. The acting chief of the National Police said on Saturday that he had "no problem" with a corruption suspect leading Indonesia's notoriously corrupt police force, although he would not obstruct the continuing investigation into Budi Gunawan by the antigraft authority.
“Of course we will not [get in the Corruption Eradication Commission's way]," Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti told the Jakarta Globe on Saturday. "We don’t have any problem with the KPK. The KPK is also a law enforcer and we will monitor each other."
On Friday night, President Joko Widodo announced that Badrodin, who was the deputy police chief, would take over in an interim role as the police chief as Gen. Sutarman was honorably discharged from the position.
“I have no problems with Budi,” the acting police chief told the Globe.
The president also announced he would postpone the appointment of Budi to police chief because of the controversy surrounding Budi's extraordinary wealth and the allegations by the KPK that it was gained illegally.
“I’m basically the police chief now," Badrodin said. "What’s different is that I’m only a three-star general and my allowances are still according to a deputy police chief.
“But with regards to tasks, authorities and responsibilities, I am the police chief.”
Badrodin, a former chief of the North Sumatra Police and Southeast Sulawesi police said the 2002 National Police Laws was unclear on the precise scope of his interim role but that he would continue to act as if he were police chief.
