AFC U-23 Cup: Indonesia Boosts Quarterfinal Chances with Victory Against Australia

Doha. The Indonesian U-23 national football team clinched a 1-0 win against Australia in Group A of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup on Thursday at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
Australia had a golden opportunity to lead, but Mohamed Toure's penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Ernando Ari. The referee awarded the penalty after consulting VAR (Video Assistant Referee) and confirming Komang Teguh's handball.
Indonesia then found the back of the net with a goal from defender Komang Teguh, who nodded in a pass from Nathan Tjoe-A-On.
This victory opens up the possibility for Indonesia to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Garuda squad currently occupies the second position with three points, equal to the host nation Qatar, who defeated Indonesia in the opening match.
Qatar will play its second match against Jordan on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. Jakarta time. Meanwhile, Australia now sits in fourth place in Group A with one point from a draw in their first match against Jordan.
Indonesia started with an aggressive approach, launching attacks from the right flank orchestrated by Witan Sulaeman. He provided a pass to Jeam Sroyer, who stood in front of the goal, but the striker from Persik Kediri missed the target with his right-footed shot.
In the 16th minute, Indonesia had a golden opportunity with a shot from Rafael Struick outside the penalty box, narrowly missing the goal.
In the 21st minute, Australian striker Mohamed Toure created a chance with a powerful shot from outside the penalty box, but it was blocked by an Indonesian player.
The referee consulted VAR to determine a possible penalty due to Toure's shot hitting Komang Teguh's hand, ultimately awarding a penalty to Australia. However, Toure's penalty was saved by goalkeeper Ernando Ari.
Australia continued to create chances, but Indonesia's defense held firm. In the 45th minute, Indonesia capitalized on a corner kick, with Komang Teguh heading the ball into Australia's net.
The second half saw Australia pressing for an equalizer, but Ernando Ari's saves denied their efforts.
As the game progressed, both teams had opportunities, but neither could alter the scoreline. In the end, Indonesia held on to their 1-0 lead until the final whistle.
Both teams will continue their campaign in the final group stage matches on Sunday with Indonesia facing Jordan at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, and Australia taking on hosts Qatar at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.
The group winners and runners-up will advance to the quarterfinals, with the winner of Group A facing the runner-up of Group B, and vice versa.
Indonesia's journey in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup began with a disappointing result against host nation Qatar, where they lost 0-2 and had two players, Ivar Jenner and Ramadhan Sananta, sent off by the referee.
