Ahok Sends Christmas Wishes From Prison
Jakarta. Former Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama sent Christmas greetings to all Christians and New Year's wishes to all Indonesians on Monday (25/12).
"May God, the source oh hope, grace us all with good health, joy and peace," Ahok wrote.
Ahok's handwriting was uploaded to Instagram by his supporters.
"People ought to be selflessly loving because it is who we are. Humans are made in the image of a selfless God; loving other is what makes us truly human. Happy New Year," he wrote in English and Indonesian.
In May, the former governor was convicted of insulting Islam in a controversial case that emerged during Jakarta's gubernatorial campaign and led thousands of hardline Muslims to hold rallies on the streets of the capital city.
Ahok has been detained at the headquarters of the National Police's Mobile Brigade in Depok, West Java.
On Christmas, he received a 15-day sentence reduction for good behavior.
He has already served a quarter of his two-year prison term.
