Jakarta. Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto was inaugurated as the new chairman of Indonesia's second biggest political party, Golkar, during an extraordinary national congress on Wednesday (20/12).

Airlangga was chosen by acclamation to replace Setya Novanto, who is currently on trial on graft charges.

"All representatives of Golkar provincial and district levels to mass organizations have agreed and supported [my] appointment," Airlangga said during the congress.

His term will end in 2019, but it can be extended through a national leadership meeting.

The national leadership elected him in on Tuesday.

The congress gave Airlangga a mandate to revitalize the party's structure and to consolidate it to face the 2018 regional and 2019 legislative and presidential elections.

"I will revitalize and restructure the party to improve its image, so we will be ready for the upcoming elections," Airlangga said.

Regarding his ministerial post, he said he will leave it to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to decide on his role in the cabinet, and will accept the president's decision.

As the chairman of Golkar, Airlangga must select Setya's replacement for the House of Representatives speaker's office.
