Jakarta. Entering its ninth year, ArtJog has grown to become a pre-eminent event in Indonesia's art calendar, bringing together an array of works by leading contemporary artists as well as launching the career of emerging names.

When it returns at Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta, on May 27, the annual art fair will showcase 97 works by 72 local and international artists.

Heri Pemad, whose art management company organizes the event, said that the exhibition, themed 'Universal Influence, will offer something different this year. "We will have artists that we believe are important to be showcased," he told Antara on Friday (20/05).

Indonesian artists who will participate at ArtJog include some luminaries — think Eko Nugroho, Agus Suwage and FX Harsono — along with a smattering of new talents curated by Bambang "Toko" Witjaksono.

Artists hailing from Malaysia, Japan, Australia and the Philippines will also display their recent works at the event. This continues ArtJog's mission in introducing international artists to Indonesian audience — just last year, works by the likes of Yoko Ono and Marina Abramovic were on display in the exhibition.

This year's theme is based on the curatorial team's view that the accumulation of historical events worldwide has given birth to a global culture.

"Through this theme, we will discover how the [universal] influence affects us. We will realize that [Indonesia] is not merely a victim of that influence," Bambang said.

Apart from the the main exhibition, ArtJog also spearheaded a series of events under the umbrella of Jogja Art Weeks in 2015 to bring the public's attention to Yogyakarta's vibrant art scene.

This year, the organizers have published Jogja Art Weeks guide book and calendar — both of which can be downloaded here — that list down all kinds of art events and exhibitions across the city, ranging from a special showcase by performance artist Melati Suryodarmo at Ark Galerie to a music show by Jazz Mben Senen Community at Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta.

ArtJog 9 takes place from May 27 to June 27, at Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta. For more information, visit artjog.co.id.
