Jakarta. One of the two suspects accused of hurling acid into top anti-graft investigator Novel Baswedan called his victim as “traitor” as he was transferred to the National Police’s detention facility in Jakarta in the weekend.

"Please take note: I don’t like Novel because he is a traitor," the suspect, identified by initials R.B., shouted to journalists as he was escorted to the detention facility.

R.B. has confessed to hurling acid into Novel’s face, severely damaging the victim’s eyes. Another suspect identified as R.M. took him on a motorcycle during the April 2017 attack.

Both men are active police brigadiers stationed at the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) Unit in Depok, West Java. A police source revealed their names as Ronny Bugis and Rahmat Matullete, who have mostly worked out of office to surveil radical groups.

“We certainly had no forethought that the two were the attackers. They have maintained discipline although they were mostly assigned to outdoor duties of surveilling radical groups,” the source told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday.

The job doesn’t require both policemen to report duty to their office every day, he said.

“They only need to attend the office once a month, but must report regularly,” the source said.
