Australian Embassy Invites Applications for 2018 Elizabeth O'Neill Journalism Award
Jakarta. The Australian Embassy has called on Indonesian journalists to submit their applications for the 2018 Elizabeth O'Neill Journalism Award, which forms part of efforts to strengthen bilateral understanding between the two neighboring countries.
"One Indonesian journalist and one Australian journalist will be given this award, and will get the chance to spend up to two weeks in Indonesia or Australia," the embassy said in a statement on Thursday (04/01).
The annual award pays respect to the career of Elizabeth O'Neill, an Australian diplomat who died in the crash of Garuda Indonesia Flight 200 at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta on March 7, 2007.
"The award builds on her tireless work to foster mutual understanding of Australia and Indonesia through accurate and informed media coverage," the embassy said.
O'Neil was a counsellor at the Australian Embassy's public affairs section at the time of the accident. She was on duty when she died.
Last year, the award was bestowed on Bonny Symons-Brown, a journalist at the Australian national broadcaster, ABC TV, and Josie Susilo Hardianto, a journalist at Indonesia's Kompas newspaper.
The program is tailored to each journalist's area of expertise and reporting. The visit will also include meetings with local media organizations, government officials, leading civil society figures and academic institutions.
Applications for this year's award are due on Jan. 22.
Candidates will be chosen by a selection panel made up of representatives of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australia-Indonesia Institute.
