Batangtoru Hydro Power Plant to Open in 2022
MAY 14, 2018
Jakarta. North Sumatra Hydro Energy, or NSHE, the developer of a 510-megawatt hydroelectric power plant in Batangtoru, South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, said the facility is going to be operational by 2022.
The project, developed on 90 hectares, has already met a number of requirements set by the government, NSHE said in a statement on Monday (14/05).
The requirements include environmental impact and risk analyses, as well as securing several permits regarding the development's social impact.
Last year, South Tapanuli residents protested against the development, as the power plant requires a dam, of which construction could lead to evictions and destruction of the forest.
NSHE public relations manager Agus Supriono said the plant will be build on the land that was allocated by the North Sumatra provincial government and has obtained a ministerial approval to be used for the development.
"We understand that the forest ecosystem plays an important role ... We are not going to sacrifice it. This has been our commitment from the very beginning," he said.
The plant will be operated during peak hours to prevent power blackouts in the region.
The construction will commence by year's end.
