BNN’s Ministerial Upgrade Not a Problem: Bureaucratic Reform Minister

MARCH 14, 2016

Jakarta. Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi has announced he will follow up on the ministerial upgrade of the National Narcotics Agency, or BNN, under the direct coordination from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

“If the Chief Security Minister has already mentioned [the matter] to the president, we will follow up on it. No problem at all,” Yuddi said in Jakarta on Monday (13/03).

Yuddi added that the president has the authority to upgrade a government institution into a ministry.

“So, if the president considers a ministerial move for BNN, he will instruct the [Bureaucratic Reform] Ministry to prepare an amendment of the current Presidential Regulation.”

However, there has been no urgency to amend Presidential Regulation No. 23/2010 on the National Narcotics Agency, according to Yuddi. Based on Article 1 of the regulation, BNN is a non-ministerial institution under the coordination of the Indonesian Police chief.

“The most important issue now is how BNN can conduct its main duties and functions, possibly with the budget support and coordination from various institutions,” Yuddi said.

BNN’s new status as a ministry is hoped to strengthen the support it receives from the community — similar the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), widely considered to be among the most popular public institutions.

Greater visibility of the agency will also increase public awareness on the dangers of narcotics.
