Bogor Provides Answer to Jakarta's Trash Problems
Jakarta. The Bogor district government has offered land to build a landfill for Jakarta's waste, following increasing disputes at the Bantargebang landfill in Bekasi.
“We are currently looking for the right location for the landfill,” Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, city Governor, said on Thursday at the City Hall in Central Jakarta.
The government will continue its search for the best place to build the 50 hectare fill.
Basuki said the dumpsite will not be the final solution to the capital's waste problems, indicating that an Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF) featuring a high-temperature incinerator is the next stage.
“We don't want to dispose our waste all the way in Bogor or Bekasi because of transport cost," Basuki said.
The governor said the city will build four ITFs in the city — two in North Jakarta and one each in West and East Jakarta —and Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) has been assigned to the project.
Jakarta has been burdened with garbage since the end of October after Bekasi authorities objected to continuing the practice of allowing Jakarta garbage trucks to continue dumping at the Bantargebang landfill, citing an overflow of bad smells in the area.
Bekasi City Council members last month claimed Jakarta garbage trucks have been hauling quantities of wast well above the agreed limit as well as driving through Bekasi streets outside of permitted hours.
