Jakarta. Indonesian National Football Team coach Shin Tae-Yong and OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman are among the foreign nationals who have received a Golden Visa from the Indonesian government.

Coach Shin expressed his delight upon receiving a Golden Visa from President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Golden Visa launch event hosted by the Law and Human Rights Ministry at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Thursday.

"Honestly, I didn't know about the Golden Visa before, and this is new to me. When I was first contacted about receiving the Golden Visa, I was a bit confused. But knowing more about it, especially receiving it directly from the president, I am very happy and honored," he said after receiving the Golden Visa.

Coach Shin expressed his pride in being awarded the Golden Visa, feeling that his hard work over the past 4.5 years with the Red and White Team has been recognized by both the public and President Jokowi.

After receiving the Golden Visa, Coach Shin emphasized the need to work even harder for Indonesian football.

"Currently, Indonesian football is still ranked low, but we need to work harder to aim for the upcoming World Cup," he concluded.

Under Shin Tae-Yong's guidance, the Garuda squad made their first appearance at the 2023 Asian Cup in 16 years, reaching the Round of 16. He also led the Young Garuda to their first semifinal in the 2024 AFC U-23 Championship and narrowly missed the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Now, Shin is focused on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Indonesia is drawn alongside Asia’s football giants: Saudi Arabia, Australia, China, Japan, and Bahrain.

At the same event, Director General of Immigration at the Ministry, Silmy Karim, revealed that 300 foreign nationals have already applied for Indonesia's Golden Visa.

"Global talents include the creator of ChatGPT, Samuel Altman, in the IT field, and today, Shin Tae-Yong in sports," he said after the Golden Visa launch event.

Silmy did not provide details on all the figures who have received the Golden Visa. However, he mentioned that the goal is to grant 1,000 Golden Visas to foreign nationals this year.

"Currently, the profiles of the recipients are not widely known, but we hope to have 1,000 foreign nationals receive the Golden Visa this year," he stated.

The Golden Visa grants investors residency for up to 10 years.

Individual investors who invest at least $2.5 million and plan on establishing a company can stay for five years. The government will grant them a 10-year residency if their investment reaches $5 million.

Individuals who do not wish to set up a company are also eligible for the Golden Visa. Indonesia only requires them to invest at least $350,000 into the country for a 5-year residency. They can stay for a decade if they wish to double it.

Corporate investors must set up a company in Indonesia and invest at least $25 million to get a 5-year residency, while those whose investment tops $50 million can stay in the country for 10 years. In other words, the more they invest, the longer their stay permits.
