Jakarta. The daily number of coronavirus cases have left the five-digit territory in the last three days in an apparent sign that post-holiday surge in newly cases is over.

Indonesia recorded 8,776 cases on Wednesday to take its total to 1.18 million, government figures show. 

The total number of active cases has decreased by around 10,000 to 168,416 from last week.

The seven-day average of newly cases also has fallen to the lowest figure since January 15, when the daily count was approaching a new peak.

Newly cases have been in a steady decline in the last 10 days, although the country still averages over 10,000 cases this month.

The fatality toll is trending down as well with an average of 217 coronavirus-related deaths in the 10-day period, in comparison to an average of 280 deaths in the last 10 days of January.

There have been 32,167 Covid deaths since the outbreak began, with a further 191 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The overall death toll accounts for 2.7 percent of the total number of confirmed cases.

Most key hotspots report a drastic drop in daily total, with Jakarta and Bali becoming an exception.

Jakarta still averages 3,400 cases this month, continuing with the dramatic surge it has been experiencing since mid-January.

The capital city has recorded a total of 303,715 cases, including 4,709 deaths.

West Java is the province with the total number of cases closest to that of Jakarta, totaling 170,642 as of Wednesday.

However, the seven-day average in West Java has dropped dramatically to 1,862 from a record 3,701 in the past ten days.

The country’s most populous province added just 660 cases on Wednesday, its lowest daily count since Dec. 29.

Coronavirus cases are trending down in Central and East Java, which together with Jakarta and West Java make up 63 percent of the national tally.

East Java has the highest number of Covid deaths, totaling 8,286. Central Java comes next with 5,713 deaths.

A sharp drop in daily cases is occurring in South Sulawesi and Banten, while Riau, West Sumatra and Yogyakarta also see a downturn.

The average of daily cases in South Sulawesi has dropped by around a half when compared to last month’s figures.

Daily numbers have been cut to below 100 in other hotspots like Banten, West Sumatra and Riau.

But Bali and East Kalimantan continue to see a growth in newly cases at a rate higher than the January numbers.
