Jakarta. Indonesia recorded 4,065 new cases of coronavirus to take the country’s total to 425,796 on Thursday, after a week of a steady decline in newly cases. It’s for the first time in eight days that the daily number has exceeded 4,000.

An additional 89 Covid-19 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 14,348.

The surge is a bit slowing in most of the 10 worst-affected provinces, although six of them continue to report three-digit daily total.

Jakarta reported 797 new cases to take its total to 109,411, more than twice as many cases as in East Java in the second place.

The capital city registered 15 more coronavirus-related deaths to take the total death toll to 2,328.

East Java has a total of 53,791 cases and 3,853 Covid-19 deaths, the highest death toll nationwide.

The daily number has been trending up in West Java since the beginning of the month, averaging 443 cases. The province of 50 million people has a total of 38,551 cases, including 761 deaths.

It increases its share in the national tally to more than 9 percent.

Central Java added 360 cases for a total of 35,978. It has the third-highest death toll with a total of 1,819 Covid deaths.

The four provinces in Java account for 56 percent of the country’s total number of coronavirus cases.

West Sumatra and East Kalimantan come out with the biggest daily numbers outside Java, both have been averaging three digits in the last five days.

West Sumatra registered 238 new cases to take its total to 15,421 to rank sixth among worst-hit provinces.

East Kalimantan reported 307 cases, the highest one-day rise in more than two weeks, to take the province total to 14,950.

The daily number in Riau has been reaching three digits in the last three days, including 159 on Thursday to take its total to 15,278. The province in the central part of Sumatra averages 96 cases.

South Sulawesi, which has the fifth biggest number of coronavirus infections with a total of 18,532, averages just 37 cases this week.

The surge is also slowing in North Sumatra, Bali and South Kalimantan. Bali returned to the top ten of provinces with the most Covid cases on Wednesday more because of a  much slower growth in South Kalimantan, which dropped to 11th.
