Jakarta. Angela Tanoesoedibjo inherited the leadership of the United Indonesia Party (Perindo) from her media mogul father, Hary Tanoesoedibjo, on Wednesday and immediately signaled a change in direction.

In her acceptance speech during Perindo’s national gathering in Central Jakarta, Angela indicated that Perindo will leave the coalition that supported defeated presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo and instead support President-Elect Prabowo Subianto.

"Perindo, ladies and gentlemen, must move on together with the people and support pro-people policies and the continuity of a government that aspires to bring prosperity and unity to Indonesia in line with our shared aspirations,” Angela said.

The continuity of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s policies has become the central theme of Prabowo’s presidential campaign. He has teamed up with Jokowi’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as his running mate.

Under Hary Tanoe, the nickname of the media mogul, Perindo pledged allegiance to the Jokowi government. The party decided to support Ganjar before Prabowo appointed Gibran as his running mate and received implicit endorsement from Jokowi.

Angela admitted that Perindo’s approach is to be part of the pro-government coalition so that the party can make a significant contribution to people’s prosperity.

"The party line is to support the government. Why is that? Because that’s the only way to make an impactful contribution with pro-people policies from the government," she said.

Angela added that as the new party chairwoman, she will tour other political parties, including Prabowo’s Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra).

Perindo aims to achieve equal distribution of prosperity among people and supports inclusive and sustainable economic development in the diverse nation, she said.

Her main target is to win House of Representatives seats for Perindo, which has failed to do so since its election debut in 2014.

"We must implement data-based policy making. We must eliminate the gap between our party and the younger generation and the whole people," Angela said.

Hary announced that the ceremony to inaugurate Angela as the party leader will be held on October 8 when Perindo celebrates its 10th anniversary.
