Jakarta. A deadly riot by terrorism detainees at a police prison near Jakarta ended early Thursday (10/05), with a surrender of 155 inmates, Chief Security Minister Wiranto confirmed.
The riot broke out at the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) detention center in Depok, West Java, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, claiming the lives of five police and one convict. An officer was taken hostage.
Among the dead are members of the National Police's counterterrorism unit, Densus 88. Another four officers were severely injured and are still hospitalized at the Kramat Jati police hospital.
"This morning, we ended it ... When we were planning to attack, before dawn, they surrendered, one by one they walked out, unarmed, 145 out of 155 surrendered," Wiranto said in a press conference at the Brimob headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok.
There were no negotiations during the final part of the operation, he said. Police attacked the remaining rioters with explosives, tear gas and grenades. Eventually, the men gave themselves up. They were armed with 30 rifles they took from a prison armory.
According to Brimob commander Insp. Gen. Rudy Sufahriadi, the hostage was rescued prior to the police assault, and other inmates in the prison compound have been safe. He added that the convicts detonated handmade bombs to hinder rescue efforts.
National Police deputy chief Comm. Gen. Syafruddin said the 155 detainees under scrutiny have been transferred to the maximum-security prison island of Nusakambangan, off the south coast of Java.
Wiranto said police followed international standard operating procedures in the 36-hour operation, which started with a persuasive approach. The assault was launched when the rioters answered with violence. Security forces will examine the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future, he said.
He requested that Indonesians pray for the souls of the slain officers.
