Democratic Party Thanks Anti-Graft Agency for Shutting Down Bank Century Case

SEPTEMBER 14, 2016

Jakarta. The Democratic Party has thanked the Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, for shutting down investigation into the notorious Bank Century bailout case, with the party saying the case had absolutely no foundation.

"As I have always said, the Bank Century case is all rubbish. No proof to the allegation whatsoever," Ruhut Sitompul, a Democratic Party politician, said in Jakarta on Wednesday (14/09).

According to Ruhut, who is also a member of a special committee on the Bank Century case at the parliament, the case had been too politicized. Ruhut said the case was blown up by particular groups to secure their own interests.

"I had just become a member of the House in 2009 when the case came up. Our party was soon targeted, mostly because we won the election," Ruhut said.

He also pointed out that in the last seven years no Democratic Party member had been proven to be involved in the case.

"Out of all the Bank Indonesia officials who were implicated, none was from our party. We want to thank the KPK for shutting down the case," Ruhut said.

KPK leaders said on Tuesday the anti-graft agency had decided to stop investigation into two major corruption cases: the Bank Century bailout case which happened during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration and the alleged swindle of a Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) during Megawati Soekarnoputri’s presidency.
