East Java Set to Outnumber Jakarta in Coronavirus Cases

JUNE 24, 2020

Jakarta. East Java again had the most daily cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday to bring its total number of cases to 10,115, an increase by 258 from a day earlier. East Java is the second province to register more than 10,000 cases, only a day after Jakarta reached that sad milestone.

It is now only 135 cases behind Jakarta -- the narrowest gap in over three months. With a much faster speed of Covid-19 infections, East Java is set to surpass Jakarta in the top place and it may happen in one or two days.

Just three weeks ago, more than 2,400 cases separated the two provinces.

The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients in Jakarta has beaten active cases, a fate East Java is really struggling to achieve.

As of Tuesday, Jakarta has registered 10,250 cases, including 594 deaths, 5,228 recovered patients and 4,428 active cases.

East Java so far had 2,915 recovered patients, 741 deaths and 6,459 active cases. The number of active Covid-19 cases in East Java has surpassed that in Jakarta since early this month.

At the national level, Covid-19 cases surged by 1,051 in the 24-hour period to 47,896, including 2,535 deaths and 19,241 recovered patients, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force.

More than 70 percent of Covid-19 deaths occurred on the most densely-populated island of Java.

The disease has affected 442 of the country’s 514 districts and cities. Aceh has registered only 49 Covid-19 cases overall to become the only province with two-digit figure.
