Eight Arrested in Anti-Graft Raids in East Kalimantan and Jakarta

OCTOBER 16, 2019

Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, has arrested eight people in the East Kalimantan cities of Bontang and Samarinda and also in the capital Jakarta on Tuesday over allegations of bribery related to a major road project on the island.

"Since this afternoon at least eight people have been arrested in Samarinda, Bontang and Jakarta," KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah told reporters on Tuesday evening.

Among them is the head of the national road construction office of East and North Kalimantan area, who was arrested in Jakarta, Febri said. He was identified as Refly Ruddy Tangkere.

The office is under the Public Works and Housing Ministry.

"The rest, including staff of private companies, were arrested in East Kalimantan," Febri said.

Febri said the eight people were allegedly involved in a bribery scandal related to a Rp 155 billion ($10.9 million) road project in Kalimantan.

"The alleged bribery involved contractors from private companies in a multi-year road project worth Rp 155 billion handled by the national road construction office of East and North Kalimantan area," he said.

Refli is being interrogated at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta while the other detainees undergo questioning at the East Kalimantan Police compound.

"Those detained in East Kalimantan will be flown to Jakarta in a morning flight tomorrow," Febri said.

"We will give the details during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon or evening," he said.
