EU Blue Book a Blueprint for Good Governance in Indonesia
Jakarta. The European Union, or EU, launched the latest version of its Blue Book, an annual report on EU-Indonesia development cooperation, in Jakarta on Wednesday (11/05). The main theme of this year's Blue Book is good governance.
Vincent Guerend, the EU Ambassador to Indonesia, said the good governance theme symbolizes the EU's goal of supporting democracy, transparency and accountability in decision-making, as well as inclusiveness.
The 2016 Blue Book provides an overview of all the development assistance provided by the EU and its member states to Indonesia in 2015.
"The European Union and its member states have numerous initiatives in good governance, an area that is central in delivering the sustainable and inclusive economic growth required to reduce poverty effectively," said Guerend at the launch of the book in Jakarta.
Guerend said the good governance theme was chosen for the Blue Book this year because the EU has developed close cooperation with Indonesia to promote reforms in diverse areas through many assistance programs.
The ultimate goal of those good governance programs is improving how public institutions in Indonesia perform their roles, managing public resources as well as promoting and protecting human rights, while at the same time countering abuse and corruption and prioritizing the rule of law.
“We’ve been there before and in our experience it will be a long reform of mindset which requires commitment and willingness not only from the government, but also from the parliament and civil society organizations,” said Georg Witschel, the German Ambassador to Indonesia.
