Jakarta. The upcoming Euro 2024 can be veteran footballer Thomas Muller’s last chance to play for his country Germany.

This can also be the last chance for Muller to score a goal in the quadrennial competition.

The 34-year-old footballer has brought home many trophies, but Muller has never scored nor won the European championship. Euro marks a dark history for Muller’s career. He never took the German national team Die Mannschaft to victory or even the finals. Muller’s best achievement at this tournament was when his team became a semifinalist in the 2012 and 2016 editions.

Muller participated in 15 matches throughout his European championship history, but never scored. His best chance was in the 2020 edition when he had to face one-on-one with British goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, although the German player eventually played. Germany lost to the UK 2-0 in the round of 16 match.

The Euro 2024 will start this weekend. Age-wise, Muller is on the edge of his career, so there is no better place than the 2024 Euro to score a goal, not to mention that this championship will be held in his homeland Germany.

Muller is one of the 26 players that made it to coach Julian Nagelsmann’s list. Muller’s entry is quite surprising, considering how his performance has dropped compared to when he became a top scorer at the 2010 World Cup. Muller even made Germany the champion of the 2014 edition.

The last season with Bayern Munchen also became the first time Muller failed to win a trophy since 2012. However, Muller still scored 7 goals and 11 assists for Die Roten throughout the 2023/2024 season, even though he rarely played for the entire match.

Over the past years, Muller was not always the top pick for Bayern’s front line, including when Nagelsmann coached the team in 2021-2023. However, Muller’s presence appears to have had an impact on the field. Supporters are now hoping for another magic touch by the Raumdeuter (‘Space Interpreter’), Muller’s nickname.

The first obstacle Muller has to go through is Scotland this Saturday Jakarta time. The match takes place in Fussball Arena Munchen, which is home to Muller’s only professional club Bayern Munchen.

However, there is no guarantee that Muller will come down to the field at the beginning of the league. Muller only became a starter twice in the past 7 matches with the German national team. However, his presence can determine the fate of the match, as Muller oftentimes had an impressive performance against Scotland. 

In the 2016 Europe Cup, Muller scored two goals when Germany won 2-1 against Scotland. Muller also goaled twice and had one assist, taking Germany to victory over Scotland 3-2 in Hampden Park. 

Only time will tell if Muller will score a goal in the upcoming Euro 2024.
