Female Sumatran Elephant Shot to Death Inside Lampung Conservation Park
Jakarta. Rangers at the Way Kambas National Park and Rhino Protection Unit in Lampung found the remains of a female elephant on Monday (12/02) near the Kuala Penet resort inside the conservation area, Indonesia's Environment and Forestry Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Five bullet wounds were found in the animal that had been dead for some days. It was missing some of its body parts, including the teeth, tusks and trunk.
A team of veterinarians had conducted a post mortem examination on the rare animal. The rangers have asked for help from the local police to find the elephant killers.
The Way Kambas National Park is a conservation area for Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus), a critically endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and hairy Asian two-horned rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis).
