Female Taekwondo Athlete Wins Indonesia's First Gold in 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. Taekwondo athlete Defia Rosmaniar won Indonesia'a first gold medal at this year's Asian Games in women's individual poomsae event on Sunday (19/08).
Defia defeated Iran's Marjan Salahshouri with a score of 8,690 — 8,470 in the final match held at the Jakarta Convention Center.
She won the quarterfinal against Vietnam's Tuyet Van Chau and the semifinal against Yun Jihye of South Korea on the same day.
This is the 23-year-old athlete's first appearance at the Asian Games. In May, she won a gold medal at the 2018 Asia Taekwondo Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo was watching the match.
"Congratulations to Defia Rosmaniar, the female taekwondo athlete who seized the first gold for Indonesia in the 2018 Asian Games. I watched Defia defeating Marjan Salahshoure from Iran at the JCC's Pleary Hall," Jokowi said on Facebook.
Indonesian athletes now have one gold medal and one silver medal in the games, which just opened on Saturday.
"Praise be to God that Indonesia won its first gold medal in taekwondo on the first day," said Syafruddin, who leads the Indonesian team.
