Jakarta. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Kivlan Zein, the former chief of staff of the Indonesian Army's Strategic Command, or Kostrad, has been reported to the police for treason and spreading fake news, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.
The report was filed by a citizen activist by the name of Jalaludin, Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo told Metro TV. "We received the report yesterday [Tuesday]," he said.
Jalaludin's report included a video showing Kivlan inviting people to join a protest at the Election Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu) and General Elections Commission (KPU) offices in Jakarta on Thursday.
The police are still analyzing the video and have not released it to the public.
An invitation encouraging people to join the "Constitutional Jihad" protest on Thursday – with Kivlan's name on it – has been shared widely on WhatsApp groups in the past few days.
The goal of the protest is to force the election agencies to disqualify Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his running mate Ma’ruf Amin from the presidential race.
Jokowi's campaign team announced on Wednesday that he and Ma'ruf have already received 80 million votes according to data from all polling stations across Indonesia and abroad – more than the required 50 percent of the total votes needed to win the presidential race.
The video showing Kivlan urging supporters of Jokowi's rival, Prabowo Subianto, to join the protest on Thursday afternoon has already spread on social media.
Kivlan told the crowd to gather at Lapangan Banteng square in Central Jakarta before marching to Bawaslu and the KPU.
"At Lapangan Banteng, we will fight for freedom. Whoever tries to stop us, we will fight them. Come to Bawaslu. Our demand is for them to liquidate [sic] Jokowi.... Liquidation is much stronger than mere disqualification," Kivlan said in the 56-second video.
Under the Criminal Code, the maximum penalty for crimes against the state or treason is life imprisonment.
Another Prabowo supporter, Lieus Sungkharisma, was also reported to the police for spreading fake news about Jokowi in a separate video. The report was filed by Eman Soleman, CNN Indonesia reported.
Despite all quick count results pointing to an easy Jokowi win, Prabowo has claimed victory at least three times since the April 17 election. The former general and Sandiaga Uno, his billionaire running mate, said they won 62 percent of the votes, but have never provided any data to support the claim.
Prabowo has also claimed that the KPU has been collecting erroneous data for its official count, the result of which is expected to be announced on May 22.
