Jakarta. The Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court convicted former House of Representatives member Bowo Sidik Pangarso for corruption on Wednesday and sentenced him to five years behind bars.
The former Golkar Party politician was also fined Rp 250 million ($17,700) for accepting bribes from shipping firm Humpuss Transportasi Kimia (HTK) and several other companies.
"We pronounce the defendant, Bowo Sidik Pangarso, guilty beyond doubt of corruption according to the indictment," presiding judge Yanto said at the sentencing.
The verdict also bars Bowo from taking part in politics for four years after completing his jail term.
"An additional sanction is imposed to revoke his rights for being elected into any public post for four years starting after the defendant completes his main sentence," the judge said.
However, the sentence was lighter than the prosecution's demand of seven years in jail.
The panel of judges said the defendant had admitted wrongdoings, shown remorse, been polite throughout the legal proceedings and returned the ill-gotten money to the state.
According to court documents, Bowo accepted the equivalent of $185,000 in bribes from Taufik Agustono, a director at HTK, to help the company secure a fertilizer shipment contract.
Bowo, who served as a member of House Commission VI, which oversees state-owned enterprises, allegedly also accepted a Rp 300 million bribe from Lamidi Jimat, the president director of Ardila Insan Sejahtera, to help the company secure a fuel supply contract.
The prosecution also alleged he had accepted bribes from several other parties worth a total of $485,000 since 2016.
Bowo had pleaded guilty in an earlier hearing.
