Jakarta. The city's skateboarders and BMX riders are set to find a new home at the revitalized Kalijodo Park, West Jakarta, which has reopened with world class facilities.

The 1.5 hectare space, previously a notorious red-light district, was revamped last year under a Jakarta government plan to clean up the city and provided better public facilities.

"The skate park is considered as international standard, better than other skate parks [in the Greater Jakarta Area],” local resident Arif said on Tuesday (10/01).

The park also features fitness facilities, a multipurpose outdoor space, a playground for young children, a jogging track and a mini indoor football field.

Since its demolition last February, the park has undergone swift construction and has already began operations.

Meanwhile, a human rights group had criticized the Jakarta administration for forcefully evicting residents of the city's slums and demolishing their homes.

However, Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama claimed he has provided non-financial compensation for Jakarta residents evicted for occupying government-owned property.

Jakarta administration, along with 5,000 police and military officials, completed the eviction and demolition of the Kalijodo area, which was notorious as a haven for prostitution, alcohol abuse and gambling.
