Jakarta. Former youth and sports minister Imam Nahrawi was detained on Friday, shortly after he underwent his first questioning as a corruption suspect at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters in Jakarta.

When he stepped out of the interrogation room at 18.20 pm, Imam already wore the orange detainee's vest was in handcuffs. He had been in the room since 10.10 am.

"I will follow the legal proceedings as citizen. I believe this is my fate, every man will have theirs," Imam told a big crowd of reporters waiting for his appearance.

He refused to answer questions about his case and walked to the detainee's van escorted by KPK's security personnel.

KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said Imam was sent to the Guntur military detention facility.

"IMR, the youth and sports minister in 2014-2019, will serve his first 20 days in detention at Guntur," Febri said, calling the suspect by his initials.

The KPK has 20 days to complete the investigation into the case and bring it to the prosecutors, but the detention period can be extended for another 20 days.

Imam and his close aide Miftahul Ulum are accused of accepting Rp 26.5 billion ($1.88 million) in bribes to approve a grant proposal submitted by the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI). According to the KPK, he accepted the ill-gotten money while serving as minister in 2014-2018.

Imam submitted his resignation to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo soon after he was named a suspect last week.

The presiden has appointed manpower minister Hanif Dhakiri as acting sports minister.

Imam is the second minister in Jokowi's cabinet to be implicated in corruption after Idrus Marham was forced to step down as social affairs minister earlier. However, the case against Idrus, who has already been convicted, was unrelated to his job as minister.
