Jakarta. The Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) confirmed on Thursday that they will nominate new candidates instead of Anies Baswedan for the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Anies was previously nominated jointly by Gerindra and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) when he won the Jakarta governorship in 2017.

However, Anies and Gerindra Chairman Prabowo Subianto found themselves in a heated contest as both became presidential candidates in the February 14 election.

The former Jakarta governor drew criticism from Gerindra executives after he questioned Prabowo’s personal wealth and past human rights record during televised presidential debates.

"We have young and fresh candidates for the Jakarta electionGerindra Secretary-General Ahmad Muzani said at the legislature building in Jakarta.

When asked about Anies, Muzani humorously responded: "Anies who?"

Reports suggest that Gerindra is considering nominating internal figures such as Budisatrio Djiwandono and Moreno Soeprapto, as confidence is high following Prabowo's victory in the presidential election with 58 percent of the vote.

However, Muzani declined to disclose potential candidates for the Jakarta gubernatorial election.

"We are considering several names for gubernatorial candidates in Jakarta and other provinces. We aim to inject new energy at the provincial level," Muzani said.

Indonesia is scheduled to hold simultaneous elections for governors, mayors, and regents in 38 provinces, 98 cities, and 416 regencies on November 27.
