Golkar Chair Candidates Launch Roadshow Ahead of Congress
Jakarta. Golkar Party chairman candidates kicked off a campaign roadshow in Medan, North Sumatra, on Sunday (08/05) ahead of an extraordinary congress to elect a new leader next week.
Eight candidates have nominated running for the party’s top seat, including House speaker Ade Komarudin; lawmakers Setya Novanto, House member Mahyudin and Azis Syamsudin; former lawmakers Airlangga Hartanto, Priyo Budi Santoso and Indra Bambang Utoyo; and South Sulawesi governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
“The candidates will explain the programs they would implement if elected Golkar Party chairman,” said Sodrul Fuad, the party’s North Sumatra chapter secretary.
The campaign, which took place at the Grand Angkasa Hotel, saw hundreds of party members from across Sumatra attend.
After the Medan visit, candidates are scheduled to continue the roadshow to Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday before reaching Nusa Dua in Bali on Friday for the congress.
The extraordinary congress will elect a new chairman and bring to an end the bitter split within the party which has seen rival factions headed by incumbent chairman Aburizal Bakrie and Agung Laksono battle for over a year.
President Joko Widodo has confirmed his attendance.
