Jakarta. The government plans to relocate 6,000 civil servants to the future national capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan starting in July, a minister said on Monday.

The departure of central government employees will be implemented in stages depending on the readiness of utilities and residential buildings, Bureaucratic Reform Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas said.

“The phased relocation of 6,000 civil servants will be completed by September, God willing,” Abdullah said in Jakarta. “We will adjust the schedules with the progress in the construction of residential towers for all ministries and state agencies."

The government has invested Rp 68.6 trillion ($4.4 billion) in office buildings, apartments, worship places, toll roads, and utilities in Nusantara, according to Danis Sumadilaga, the head of the Nusantara Infrastructure Development Task Force.

The construction of a toll road connecting Nusantara and the city of Balikpapan has reached 70 percent, Danis said in a seminar in Jakarta,

The construction of the future State Palace is half-completed, he added.

President Joko Widodo has planned to inaugurate the new capital during Independence Day in August this year.

The whole construction of the “smart and green” capital city is expected to be completed by 2045, which marks the country’s centennial anniversary.
