Govt Cancels 3,143 Problematic Regional Regulations

Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has announced the cancellation of more than 3,000 problematic regional regulations in an effort simplify and unite both the central and regional governments’ visions.

“From the [central] government's evaluation, there are 3,143 problematic regulations hampering the national capacity and speed in winning the global competition, as well as opposing with the spirit of unity in diversity,” Jokowi said at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (13/06) as quoted in a statement.

According to the president, these regulations include those which stalled regional growth by extending bureaucratic lines, hampered the licensing and investment processes, slowed down the ease of doing business, as well as regulations which contradict higher laws.

“The Minister of Home Affairs, according to his jurisdiction, has cancelled these 3,143 problematic regional regulations,” Jokowi said, adding that the action was taken to empower Indonesia as a great country, tolerant and possessing competitive power.

However, Jokowi did not elaborate on which sectors the cancelled regulations affect.

The cancellation is part of the president's instruction to eliminate all problematic regulations. Previously, Jokowi often mentioned the need to update regulations.
