Jakarta. The government is hoping that the yet-to-be-built hospitals in the new capital Nusantara will be ready by the Independence Day flag ceremony.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is planning to hold the Independence Day celebrations in the new capital on Aug. 17. There are currently several hospital projects in Nusantara, one belonging to the Health Ministry. There are also private-run hospitals such as Mayapada and Hermina.

“There are three hospitals [in the new capital] that are close to completion, namely the Health Ministry hospital as well as Hermina and Mayapada,” Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said on the sidelines of the Investor Daily Roundtable forum in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Budi said the first phase of the city’s healthcare infrastructure development remains on track. He added: “So the hospitals are ready when we have more people [visiting Nusantara] on Aug. 17.”

According to Budi, making sure that the construction progress goes as planned is part of the Health Ministry’s commitment to support the country’s national strategic projects -- in this case, the capital relocation.

Nusantara is also gearing up to hold the cabinet meeting on Aug. 12. This will be the first time that the cabinet meeting takes place in Nusantara. Budi said he would make sure that the necessary healthcare services would be ready by then.

“So once the ministers and Mr. President begin working from there, at least both the basic and emergency [healthcare services] are available,” Budi said.
