Govt Will Continue to Hunt Down Corruption Fugitives: Kalla
Jakarta. Vice President Jusuf Kalla says the government will continue to cooperate with Interpol and other countries regarding the repatriation of corruption fugitives.
"The efforts will still be taken whether it is through respective nations, Interpol, or extradition partnerships," Kalla said on Wednesday (04/05) when asked about fugitives hiding out overseas.
Kalla previously said that he expected Singapore to sign an extradition agreement with Indonesia, as the country has been one of the main destinations of corruption convicts fleeing the archipelago.
State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Sutiyoso also previously mentioned that his organization was hunting 28 other Indonesian corruption convicts who are still hiding out overseas.
In April, the agency managed to repatriate Samadikun, a corruption fugitive who was previously convicted for embezzling Rp 2.5 trillion ($190 million) in state bailout money received by the now-defunct Bank Modern from the notorious Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) fund during the Asian financial crisis of 1998.
Another corruption fugitive, Hartawan Aluwi, was also repatriated after Singaporean authorities took him into custody and deported him. His permanent resident status was revoked over his alleged involvement in fraudulent investment schemes and money laundering.
