Graft Suspect Hadi Purnomo Misses Second KPK Summons
Jakarta. Hadi Purnomo, the former chief of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), failed to attend a second summons from the Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, on Thursday over a historic tax evasion case involving Bank Central Asia (BCA).
Purnomo skipped questioning earlier this month, with a KPK spokesman saying no reason had been provided, but his lawyer said on Thursday his client was "feeling ill."
"I haven't sent a doctor's letter to the KPK, I just met Hadi in Pondok Indah hospital and indeed there has been a medical procedure performed on him so he is currently being treated at the hospital," said Yanuar P. Wasesa, who is representing the corruption suspect.
KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha confirmed the anti-graft agency had been informed of the absence.
Hadi, who was director general for taxation at Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance between 2001 and 2006, was named a corruption suspect in April last year for allegedly helping BCA avoid a large tax bill in 2004.
In his capacity as director general for taxation he allegedly issued a letter absolving BCA of a disputed 1999 tax obligation, illegally overriding the decision of a subordinate who had already rejected the appeal.
The KPK contends that Hadi’s action cost the government about Rp 375 billion ($29 million) in lost tax revenue. He is facing up to 20 years in jail or Rp 1 billion ($77,000) in fine.
