Jakarta. Greenpeace Indonesia last week urged President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to follow the direction of other G20 member countries and adopt stronger policies to combat the negative effects of climate change.

In a press release issued on Thursday (22/06), Greenpeace Indonesia said Jokowi should use the G20 Hamburg summit on July 7-8 to further strengthen collective commitments of member countries to protect the environment and strategically work toward the swift implementation of the 2015 Paris climate accord.

The Group of Twenty is an international forum of governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies across the globe. Its members include Australia, China, France and Brazil. The G20 presidency for the year 2017 is presently held by Germany.

"We are certain that strengthening global and regional cooperation is the best possible solution on the effort to secure the well-being of Indonesians, within the context of addressing root issues of climate change," Greenpeace Indonesia country director Leonard Simanjuntak said in the release.

On June 1, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, inciting criticism from environmental groups and governments across the globe.

The decision, according to Greenpeace Indonesia, was an "unacceptable violation" of a multilateral agreement and has urged other members of the G20 to express their commitment to protect the climate and implement the Paris Agreement.

Leonard said Indonesia needs to corroborate its national commitments to combat climate change, which the country can do through various mechanisms, including by extending and strengthening a moratorium on forest and peatlands, as well as on palm oil plantations, and to stop coal use expansion.

He added that it is important for Indonesia to emphasize its commitments to swiftly implement the Paris Agreement and meet the goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Agenda.

The group also urged Jokowi to welcome and support the wide range of economic opportunities offered by de-carbonizing Indonesia's energy systems.

Leonard said recent breakthroughs in the country’s economy have enabled a faster transition from fossil fuels to new and renewable energy sources. He asked the president to review and refine the country’s goals on those new sources.

Earlier this month, Vice President Jusuf Kalla reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to the Paris agreement and said the archipelago nation would not be affected by Trump's decision to pull out from the accord, state news agency Antara reported.

The upcoming G20 summit will prioritize discussions on digitalization and its effects, as well as protecting the climate and advancing sustainable energy supplies within the framework of the 2030 Agenda.
