House Commission Defends KPK Fit and Proper Test Postponement
Jakarta. The House of Representatives Commission III, focusing on legal affairs, has outlined six points to explain the postponement of the fit and proper test for eight candidates to be the next leader of the Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK.
Masinton Pasaribu, an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker and member of House Commission III, pointed to six points the Selection Committee (Pansel) must consider when addressing the selection criteria.
First, the application period has exceeded the allowed 14 working days, he said, without elaborating on when the date was.
“Second, there are no prosecutors to act as the investigator and prosecutor at the KPK,” he told liputan6.com on Thursday at the House building in Senayan, Jakarta.
Some of the candidates do not have the minimum 15 years experience in law, economics, finance or banking, as outlined in the KPK Law, he said.
“Fourth, there are several candidates whose backgrounds do not match with the KPK,” Masinton said.
One candidate appears to have a conflict of interest after being involved in Pansel's activities in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
Finally, Masinton also believes the selection process has'nt met the transparency standards required by the KPK.
The lawmaker declined to name any candidates who have failed to meet the standards.
The PDI-P along with ten other factions in the Commission III will reschedule the fit and proper tests to next week at the latest.
"We are being extra careful and selective in the process to make sure that the KPK will be led by strong people with high integrity so that the anti-graft body will not be prone to [possible] legal problems [in the future],” he said.
Eight candidates currently in the running for the top job include some of the country's top legal and political minds. Saut Situmorang of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Atma Jaya Catholic University law lecturer Surya Tjandra, Central Jakarta District Court ad hoc judge for anti-corruption Alexander Marwata and National Police officer Basaria Panjaitan are all in the running for the top job.
They are joined by Agus Rahardjo, a former head at the Agency for Government Policy for Goods or Services, KPK director of Inter Institutions Cooperation Supervision Sujanarko, Hasanudin University law dean Laode Muhamad Syarif and current acting KPK head Johan Budi Sapto Pribowo.
