Indonesia Advances to AFF U-18 Championship Semifinals After Trashing Brunei 8-0

SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

Jakarta. Indonesia's under-18 national football team outclassed Brunei 8-0 in the last Group B match of the 2017 Asean Football Federation U-18 Championship on Wednesday (13/09), securing a spot in the semifinals.

With nine points from four matches, Indonesia now has a 15-goal advantage, making the group's leader after the host Myanmar beat Vietnam 2-1 on the same day.

It took just 42 seconds for Indonesia to score, with striker Muhammad Rafli sending a clinical finish after a scrimmage in Brunei defense.

Prodigy player Egy Maulana Vikri threatened goalie Hakim Zulkarnain in the 14th minute, before he contributed to Brunei defender Nazif Jaini's own goal four minutes after the first chance.

Egy added to the lead after 22 minutes, with a clinical finish aimed at Zulkarnain's far post.

Midfielder Witan Sulaeman placed a curved shot from outside the box, scoring Indonesia's fourth goal.

Rafli recorded his hat trick, after consecutively scoring in the 42nd and 47th minute, thanks to the assists of right-back Dedi Tri and tireless midfielder Asnawi Mangkualam.

In the 67th minute, Witan added another goal with a header after a corner kick.

Rafli's replacement Hanis Saghara scored the eighth goal in the 68th minute, ensuring his team's place in the semifinals.

"I think that the result was fair. The eight goals scored commensurate with the hard work we have put in," said Indonesian coach Indra Sjafri, as quoted on the AFF's website after the game.

Indonesia next will play Thailand in the semifinals on Friday (15/09), while second-placed Myanmar will see Group A's leader Malaysia.
