Indonesia Allowed Two More Swimmers at Rio Olympics

JULY 15, 2016

Jakarta. Indonesia's Olympic swimming team has seen the addition of two more athletes who have qualified for the Rio Games under the wildcard policy.

To fill the quota, the country must include one male and one female swimmer who competed in the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, in 2015.

National swimming coach Albert Sutanto said the Indonesian Swimming Federation (PB PRSI) has put forward the names of Yessy Yosa Putra and Glenn Victor Sutanto.

Yessy will compete in the women's 200-meter backstroke and Glenn in the men's 100-meter backstroke.

"For the women's swimmer, it is certainly a go for Yessy. As for men's swimmer, there is still no certainty," Albert said on Thursday (14/07).

The uncertainty arose when the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) and the PB PRSI failed to agree on the men's athlete.

KOI has chosen I Gede Siman Sudartawa in view of the fact that the International Swimming Federation (FINA) suggested that the wildcard slot should preferably be filled by a swimmer who had won an Olympic scholarship.

"Currently the Indonesian swimmer who had won an Olympic Scholarship is Siman Sudartawa. But we can at least make sure that the selected athlete is one with above-average performance," Albert said.

To decide who will eventually fill the slot, Albert said the PB PRSI and KOI will continue to have intensive discussions.

Following the wildcard, the Indonesian Olympic contingent now consists of 28 athletes, comprising 10 badminton players, seven weightlifters, four archers, two swimmers, two rowers, two track-and-field athletes and a BMX rider.
