Indonesia Closes in on China as Coronavirus Cases Cross 80,000

Jakarta. Indonesia is catching up China in the global ranking of confirmed coronavirus cases, as Southeast Asia's biggest country reported a total of 80,094 cases on Wednesday, 1,522 more from the previous day.
Indonesia has been averaging around 1,600 cases per day since the start of the month. If the trend continues, the country's total Covid-19 cases will surpass those of China by the weekend.
China, where the pandemic originated, has recorded 85,226 cases as of Wednesday, relatively unchanged over the past weeks.
It was also the deadliest day in the Indonesian outbreak so far, with 87 Covid-19 deaths to bring its total death toll to 3,797.
Central Java reported its highest single-day rise with 261 new cases, taking its total to 5,914. It's also the highest number of the day nationally, beating Jakarta by just one case.
The capital city now has 15,324 cases overall, including 706 deaths.
Daily cases in worst-hit East Java dropped significantly to 165, bringing its total to 17,395. However, the province again reported the highest daily death toll with 28 more deaths.
A total of 1,275 people have died from coronavirus in East Java, more than any other province.
South Sulwaesi, the third most affected province, added 158 cases to 7,452.
The number of recovered Covid-19 patients also sets a new record of 1,414 in a single day. taking the total number of recoveries to 39,050
