Jakarta. Indonesia is poised to replicate a historic achievement from 30 years ago, as it vies to clinch both the men's and women's national badminton team championships in the finals this afternoon.

The odds seem favorable, given that on the only two past occasions where both Indonesian teams reached the final together in the same year, they emerged victorious.

In the 1994 finals held in Jakarta, Indonesia secured its ninth Thomas Cup trophy by defeating Malaysia 3-0, and concurrently clinched its second Uber Cup title by triumphing over China 3-2.

Two years later, in Hong Kong, Indonesia defended both titles with the men's team winning over Denmark and the women's team prevailing against China.

The historical trend dates back to 1975 when Indonesia's women's shuttlers claimed their inaugural Uber Cup victory at a time when the men were the defending Thomas Cup champions. During that era, the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup tournaments were staged in alternate years.

However, host nation China poses a formidable challenge for Indonesia in Sunday's finals of both the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup.

Indonesia's men's team aims to uphold its record as the most successful team in the history of the Thomas Cup, boasting 14 trophies, ahead of China with 10 titles. Despite China's home advantage in Chengdu's Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium, Indonesia can count on fervent support from its dedicated fans.

Indonesian badminton enthusiasts have even more reason to rejoice, as the women's national team secured their spot in the Uber Cup final after a thrilling 3-2 victory over South Korea in the semifinals on Saturday. Once again, Indonesia will face off against China in the Uber Cup final.

Contrasting Semifinals
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie maintained their top-level performance after becoming All England men’s singles finalists a few weeks ago and contributed two points to the team without losing a game in the semis. In between, Indonesia’s top men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto won a rubber set against Chinese Taipei’s Yang Lee and Chi-Lin Wang.

With a 3-0 lead by Indonesia, the remaining two matches weren't necessitated.

In a much more dramatic fashion earlier in the day, the women’s team won all three singles matches but lost two doubles to the South Korean team.

Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi sealed the ticket after a nail-biting decider against Kim Min Sun that she won 17-21, 21-16, 21-19 in one hour and 9 minutes. Komang dropped to the ground in relief and exhaustion as her teammates rushed onto the court in celebration.

None of the squad members has reached the Uber Cup final before. Komang was only five years old when the Indonesian Uber Cup team reached the final the last time and was beaten by China 3-0 in 2008.

China is a dominant team in the Uber Cup with 15 titles, with the closest rival Japan only having six. Indonesia and the United States shared the third sport with three trophies each.

For the Indonesian Thomas Cup team, this marks their third consecutive final appearance, having secured one victory and suffered one defeat in the previous editions.

Jonatan Christie, reflecting on the upcoming finals, expressed surprise at the team's progress and commended the Uber team's remarkable journey to the final, particularly with their youthful squad.

"Sunday's final will mark my fourth appearance, which is unexpected given the differences in our current squad compared to previous editions," said Jonatan. "It's also remarkable that both our teams will compete in the final. The Uber team has shown incredible spirit, especially with such a young squad," he added.
