Jakarta. Indonesia and India will hold their first joint security dialogue in India next week to discuss cyber security, counterterrorism efforts and transnational organized crime, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday (04/01).

"This is one of the initiatives that had been brought up when President [Joko Widodo] Jokowi met with the Indian prime minister to discuss security and defense [in 2016], to hold a [bilateral] security dialogue," director general for South and Central Asia at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ferdy Piay, said during a press briefing in Jakarta.

The meeting, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, will be led by Chief Security Minister Wiranto and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

As part of an effort to counter increasing terrorist threats, the two countries are looking to boost their cooperation in deradicalization efforts.

"India sees that we have many similarities, being multicultural nations, and they are also experiencing problems with radicalization and they want to learn from Indonesia," Ferdy said.

The security dialogue is part of a series of meetings that are taking place between officials of the two countries this month. The high-level exchanges are part of India's "Act East" policy, which seeks to improve India's relations with other countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

On Friday, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj will attend the fifth Indonesia-India joint commission meeting in Jakarta with her Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi.

The policy covers not only economic, but also security, political, counterterrorism and defense cooperation.
